The U.C. Riverside Botanic Gardens 35th Annual
SPRING PLANT SALE

Public Sale Saturday, April 5, 12 noon to 5 pm and Sunday, April 6, 9 am to 3 pm



KEY TO THE CODES AT END OF THE PLANT DESCRIPTIONS:

H* - attracts Hummingbirds
B* - attracts Butterflies or feeds butterfly larvae
W* - Water efficient/drought tolerant plants
C* - California native plant or derivative
F* - especially good cut Flower or cut Foliage
S* - fragrant flowers ("S" for Scented)

Acorus gramineus 'Masamune', "VARIEGATED SWEET FLAG" - Handsome grasslike plant forming tight clumps of slender, cream-margined leaves; especially useful for water feature margins & containers. [13]

Acorus gramineus 'Pusillus', "DWARF SWEET FLAG" - Handsome grasslike plant forming dwarf, tufted clumps of slender, dark green foliage; especially useful for water feature margins & containers. [20]

Colocasia esculenta 'Illustris', "IMPERIAL TARO" - Handsome, tuberous tropical plant w/ large, arrow-shaped sea-green leaves w/ velvety purple coloration between the lighter veins; can be grown in water. [4]

Cyperus isocladus, "DWARF PAPYRUS" - Evergreen perennial forming a clump of three-sided, leafless, bright green stalks topped by a tuft of shiny green, thread-like bracts, like a miniature papyrus; aquatic, or moist site. [4] (F*)

Cyperus papyrus, "PAPYRUS" - Most unusual, graceful perennial w/ 6-10 ft., green, three-sided stalks topped by mop-like head of thread-like parts; good near water features or in other moist soil. [8] (F*)

Eichhornia crassipes, "WATER HYACINTH" - Unusual & easy water plant w/ bulbous stems topped by shiny, rounded leaves & thick spikes of 2 in., orchid-like, lilac blue flowers in summer; floats on water surface. [20]

Hibiscus lasiocarpa (H. californicus), "ROSE-MALLOW" - Endangered, Calif. native shrubby perennial from Sacramento Delta area; heart-shaped, toothed leaves & 4-6 in. creamy white flowers w/ deep red centers in summer; marsh plant. [17] (H*B*)

Iris pseudacoris, "YELLOW FLAG" - Vigorous, rhizomatous perennial w/ sword-shaped foliage to 5 ft. topped w/ showy, yellow flowers in spring; good vertical accent near water feature. [15] (H*)

Lobelia cardinalis 'Queen Victoria', "CARDINAL FLOWER" - Perennial for moist site w/ rich soil in very light shade or part sun; rosette of narrow, reddish leaves & a 2-4 ft. spike of glowing red, tubular, 2-lipped flowers in summer; hummingbird favorite. [8] (H*)

Marsilea macropoda, "WATER CLOVER" - Uncommon fern for pond, waterside, groundcover or container culture; long-stalked, velvety, "4-leaf clover" leaves, arise from slender, creeping rhizome. [19]

Myriophyllum aquaticum, "PARROT FEATHER" - Easy & vigorous floating plant for pond or tub garden w/ feather-like, blue-green leaves arranged "foxtail" style along ropy stems. [10]

Pontederia cordata, "PICKEREL WEED" - Aquatic plant w/ long-stalked, heart-shaped leaves held well above the water & long stems topped w/ a compact spike of bright blue flowers. [26] (H*C*)
